While my husband and I were enjoying some much needed time away this weekend, we watched a segment on Fox News entitled What's Really In Your Fruit Snack? I thought it fit so perfectly with our recent article: Why We Chose the Feingold Diet that I wanted to share it here for you to view.
We were never a big fruit snack family to begin with, but once we realized the effects of food dyes on our son's behavior, they became strictly off-limits. (see Why We Chose the Feingold Diet)
If your children absolutely love fruit snacks and you are looking for some healthier options, here are a few we have tried:
My kids like the YummyEarth Gummy Bears just as much as the lollipops. I love the fact that they are organic as well! They are available through Amazon for $4.99/10pk (click on image above), also, I recently spotted them at Meijer in the candy isle. I believe they were priced at $5.99/10pk.
The Jelly Belly fruit snacks have a great flavor and are actually made with real fruit juice. (contains no artificial flavorings or dyes) They are not organic, however, and do contain corn syrup.
The Annie's Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks are the only brand we have not yet tried, but they seem to be very popular. They are organic like the YummyEarth. They are available at Whole Food Market as well as Amazon.
Healthy fruit snacks are a treat in our home, not a pantry staple. I currently have a bag of Yummy Earth hidden in my closet for the children as a surprise for Easter. Sometimes in the summer I will buy a bulk case through Amazon because it's nice to have more convenient snacks on hand throughout the busy summer months.
If you are frustrated with your child's hyperactive behavior, don't forget to take a look at his diet!
I encourage you to read: Why We Chose the Feingold Diet
